On day of movement, Georgia holds steady w/ Vance/Figgins update

All kind of changes near the top of the major college football polls today, but Georgia wasn’t a big mover after its 26-14 win over Tennessee.

Georgia held steady at No. 10 in the AP poll and moved up a spot to No. 9 in the USA Today coaches’ poll. Florida jumped up six spots in the AP poll and past Georgia to No. 5 in the AP poll and up five spots in the coaches’ poll to No. 7 after a 51-21 drilling of LSU.

The Bulldogs are the fourth highest rated one-loss team in the AP poll, but the computers that factor into the BCS might give Georgia more respect.

Georgia falls out of AP Top 10

Georgia tumbled as expected in the polls today.

The Bulldogs dropped eight spots to No. 11 in the Associated Press top 25 and seven to No. 10 in the USA Today coaches' poll after its 41-30 loss to Alabama Saturday night.

The Bulldogs are the second-highest one-loss team after Southern Cal in both polls after a weekend in which nine ranked teams lost including three of the top four.

Georgia is tied with South Florida (5-0) for No. 10 in the coaches’ poll.

The first Harris poll will also be released today.

The coaches’ poll, Harris poll and computer rankings go into the BCS formula to determine the two teams to play in the national title game.

Alabama moved up to No. 2 in the AP poll and No. 4 in the coaches’ poll.

Schedule can be friend or foe for No. 3 Bulldogs

Georgia dropped another spot to No. 3 in the AP and coaches’ polls on Sunday behind top-ranked Southern California and No. 2 Oklahoma.

The Bulldogs’ remaining schedule could be their friend or foe if it's going to finish in the top two of the BCS standings and get into the national title game.

Georgia has the best chance of the three top teams to build up its resume from here on out because it’s got the toughest games left on its schedule.

There are five SEC teams ranked in the AP top 10 for the first time in history. Georgia is the highest ranked and has the other four on its schedule still to come.

“We’re going to play so many big games that I don’t think it’s going to bite us in the long run,” coach Mark Richt said Saturday night about just getting by South Carolina 14-7.

Martin creeps up on Chambliss

Sen. Saxby Chambliss leads Democratic challenger Jim Martin by just six points, according to a poll released today by Team Martin.

Chambliss leads Martin 42-36 – anything under 50 percent for an incumbent shows vulnerability – and only 21 percent of respondents think the country is on the right track. The Mellman Group’s poll of 600 likely voters was conducted Wednesday through Sunday and has a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percent.

Martin actually leads Chambliss 52-37 among voters who know both. The problem is that Chambliss' name ID is 67 percent and Martin's is 47 percent.

A poll memo is available here.

I encourage you to take any internal poll released to the public with a big ol’ shaker full of salt, but as Paul Broun showed us, sometimes they can be right on the money.
