Splashdown revisited w/practice update

The monotony of preseason camp was interrupted Wednesday morning by a little wet and wild fun for the Georgia football team.

For the second year in a row, the team filed into buses and headed to the Ramsey Center, where they were surprised by getting 45 minutes of pool time.

Last year, the players went diving on a 105-degree day. This time, they went on a rainy day.

“I was actually hoping for everybody to be in full pads and thinking we were going to hit this morning,” coach Mark Richt said. “When the weather hit like it did, we had them convinced we were going to come over here and do a walk-through in Ramsey like we normally do on a rain day. We stretched a little bit and I told them we wanted to get nice and flexible so nobody pulled a hamstring off the high dive. They got the picture.”

Asher Allen was the first player to file into the Gabrielsen Natatorium.

Drew Williams was first off the 10-meter platform, which is 33 feet high.

Offensive lineman Tanner Strickland didn’t quite get liftoff off a diving board, drawing laughter from teammates.

Rennie Curran flexed in the air before he hit the water.

Richt needled some slow moving divers.

“Come on Nick, let’s go we don’t have all day,” Richt shouted up to Nick Williams on the 10-meter.

And encouraged another, freshman Baccari Rambo, who was reluctant to go from up high.

Teammates cheered Rambo on when he finally took the plunge.

Some players began going off the 10-meter platform side by side.

That drew an announcement from an aquatics staff member that only one person is permitted to go off at a time.

About 15 players relaxed in the hot tub on the side.

Fullback Brannan Southerland smartly avoided any diving.

“I didn’t think it would be a good idea to go in there and jump around on the foot,” said Southerland, who is still wearing a boot after undergoing foot surgery. “I just swam around a little bit.”

Richt did two 10-meter back flips without the dramatic effect of last year when he was waiting on the platform when the players entered the pool area.

Offensive tackle Kiante Tripp gave Richt the highest score of any diver.

“He gets 100 percent on that one right there,” Tripp said.

Tripp said he was mentally prepared for two practices Wednesday.
“Today really surprised me,” said Tripp. “I got my head right for the worst. When they told me we were going to the pool, I was shocked. I think the guys needed a rest because we’ve got a lot of injured players.”

PRACTICE UPDATE

For the second day in a row, redshirt freshman Aron White worked as the second-team tight end ahead of sophomore Bruce Figgins. Not sure if that’s more about something White did right or that Figgins did wrong.
Linebacker Dannell Ellerbe was in a green non-contact jersey today.
Richt said he thought it was a “shoulder/rotator cuff bruise.”
Tailback Knowshon Moreno (shoulder) wore green again. I wonder if he’s going to go through the entire preseason in green like the quarterbacks. He is that valuable.
“I think coach (Tony) Ball feels better when he’s in green,” Richt said.
Richt said Moreno’s shoulder is bothering him, still not 100 percent.
Wide receiver A.J. Green (hip flexor) was kneeling down watching while other receivers ran their routes during the portion of practice when reporters were permitted to watch.
Josh Davis again got the bulk of the first-team work at left tackle with Trinton Sturdivant out for the season with a knee injury.
“We like what Josh is doing, progressing and getting better,” Richt said.
