Is Glenn gone?
Not likely, but House Speaker Glenn Richardson is having a bad week.
First, his BFF Barry Fleming gets run over by the Jesus Train. Now, there’s a rebellion brewing against him.
Among the freedom fighters: State Reps. Tommy Benton, R-Jefferson, and Terry England, R-Auburn.
"’I think we've got the votes,’ Benton told (the Braselton News, of all people). ‘If we are unsuccessful with this, you'll probably see my office in the island of Nod somewhere with the others.’ Benton is correct. The oldest rule in politics definitely applies in challenges to a Speaker - if you shoot at the king you'd better finish the job.’”
I’d be on the phone with U-Haul if I were you, Mr. Benton. Over at Peach Pundit, Earl Erhart, Richardson’s top lieutenant, claims the speaker has 90 of 107 caucus votes locked up.
I hear the secessionists will be non-persons by the end of the month.
Smoove B(iolab)
There is a new NBAF web site up and it is … kinda retarded.
Whoever he is, this guy needs to quit watching so many “Ladies’ Man” sketches. Japanese encephalitis: yeah, that is disgusting. Have some Courvoisier.
Come on, Athens. You’ve been mocking current events for decades. You can do better.
Law and Order: Special Senate Unit
How could you not want this guy to be your U.S. senator?
The Jim Martin campaign had a bit of a brain fart Thursday and sent out a press release touting a “unanimous endorsement.” Setting aside the fact that Vernon Jones is still in the race, Lanier had already said he’d be sitting out the runoff. Martin campaign manager Ellery Gould said he got the wrong impression from a conversation between Martin and Lanier Tuesday night.
I e-mailed Lanier to ask him about it and, proving once again that he’s the coolest person ever to run for office, he responded in the form of a screenplay.

Crime lab technicians brush for fingerprints on desk as Det. Carvey examines items and Sgt. Thunder peers at computer screen
Thunder (at screen)
“It’s odd they would say this about him.”
Carvey (examining desk clock)
“No shit, Sherlock. He only got 4%.”
Thunder (still looking at screen)
“You mean 40%?”
Carvey (irritated, to Thunder)
“No, Dick Tracey, he only got 4%. Never seen anything so silly in 30 years on the force.”
Thunder (perplexed; tapping screen as he looks to Carvey)
“Detective – Jones got 40%, and here Martin says he has ‘unanimous support’ from his opponents. Why would Jones endorse the guy who got less votes than he did? I don’t get it.”
Carvey (sharp, laying desk clock down with a snap)
“I’m talking about Lanier!”
Thunder (sharp)
“Lanier?! I’m talking about Jones! Who cares about Lanier? He only got 4%.”
Carvey (superiorly)
“That’s what I ….”
Carvey & Thunder simultaneously
“Ah – hah!”
Carvey (wisely, looking closely at computer screen, moving Thunder aside)
“Got to be a hidden meaning here somewhere. It just doesn’t add up.
Carvey (stands, looks away from screen as if talking to himself)
“Call the lab. Tell ‘em to find a copy of the Beatles White Album and play it backwards. And they better find something and have it by the time I get there.”
Thunder (proudly as he manipulates his cell phone)
“I’m on it!”

Nothing against Ralston, but
Nothing against Ralston, but I'd rather see Mark Burkhalter take over as the new speaker. Things were much more civil when he filled in a pro-tem this year... and, unlike our current speaker, Mark is actually a nice guy.
I had a state house
I had a state house candidate from our area tell me he planned on voting for Burkhalter if elected. I personally know David Ralston and his family. He is an alright guy.
One thing I know is the Speaker has to go.
Agree'd
You are a funny guy, Blake. I agree with you on the new NBAF website.
Broun won in a landslide and I had no doubt about the outcome.
I think that NBAF blog is
I think that NBAF blog is kind of awesome. Freaking weird, but awesome.
I'm sick of the whole debate, frankly. I don't think either side is representing a fair picture.
Well of course not ... you
Well of course not ... you have the government on one side and staunch opponents on the other. You really can't trust either one to present a balanced picture.
Kleache - any time that you
Kleache - any time that you have two extreme sides debating on a subject such as NBAF, you will never get a clear picture. It is up the individual to find the "clear" in the picture and decide for themselves. I definitely lean closer to not agreeing with the NBAF, but I do understand that good comes from both sides

While I don't trust DHS any
While I don't trust DHS any more than most of the biggest anti-NBAF people, I highly doubt that their intentions are nefarious in building a lab. So then that leaves us with the fear that something might go wrong--because we can agree, can't we, that they don't want to build the lab with the express purpose of infecting Athens Clarke with foot and mouth disease? To me, it's like actively fearing another terrorist attack. There are too many immediately threatening aspects to our lives already to leave me any emotional energy for those big what-ifs.
It doesn't mean you can't plan for the future, and protect yourself as best as you can, but I guess I'd prefer the same folks howling the loudest about NBAF "what ifs" to spend a little more time dealing with the "already ares"--homelessness, pollution, underpaid police and fire services, etc.
