Paul Broun’s plan for Flag Day: drive to South Carolina, buy out a fireworks store and shoot his arsenal straight at SCOTUS.
“One of the major reasons that the colonies grew so tired of the King of England was they realized that their rights were not being respected and the king could do anything he pleased,” Broun wrote Monday in his weekly legislative update.
“Part of the genius of the Constitution is that the government can only be changed by the people, not a despotic ruler,” he said.
“Any individual that uses his or her power to subvert the original intent of the Constitution or its amendments in any way betrays the amendment process, betrays the American people, and becomes tyrannical.
“The most recent example of a tyrannical ruling is Kennedy v. Louisiana, in which the Supreme Court overturned laws in more than a dozen states and, overturned military law which allowed capital punishment in cases of child-rape. As a New York Times article pointed out, ‘Congress had recently made the rape of a child a capital offense in the military.’ It’s a shame that the Supreme Court thinks it is so much smarter than the states and the U.S. Congress.
“This group of nine justices has routinely handed down decisions that rewrite the Constitution and its amendments.
“I only want justices who will rule on the original intent of the Constitution and leave the amending process to the people and their elected representatives. Those who will not abide by the constitution need to be removed by impeachment.”
Taking sides
Although Broun’s Republican opponent, Barry Fleming, has drawn support from dozens of his colleagues in the state House, locals have mostly stayed neutral. Until now.
Perusing the candidates’ latest FEC filings, I noticed that state Reps. Bob Smith, R-Watkinsville, Terry England, R-Auburn, and Tommy Benton, R-Jefferson, added their names to the list of Fleming supporters.
State Sen. Ralph Hudgens, R-Hull, was the lone state lawmaker to go with Broun. Hudgens likes having a congressman from Athens, he said. My question is, can we have two?
Have at it, Jacob Durden
Bobby Saxon filed his pre-primary FEC report this afternoon, and it is ugly. He raised $22,380 and has $31,440 on hand. He did get contributions from the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and the United Food and Commercial Workers – though not any bricklayers – but just four district residents, two of them his relatives, gave more than $100. The usual Athens suspects are MIA.
That means the two fundraisers he’s held here recently netted him virtually nothing. And paying his campaign manager and the rent on his Milledge Avenue headquarters is eating up his entire meager cash flow.
Dear Barry,
I heart you. Do you heart me back?
Luv,
The Augusta Chronicle
I bet Fleming does after the ABH’s sister paper endorsed him Sunday. Newspapers rarely endorse primary candidates, let alone on the highest-circulation day of the week.
And “revelations?” Really? All anyone had to do to find out about Broun’s divorces and bankruptcy was be within earshot of him.

I am anxious to see
the detailed report. I hear there will be a potential FEC complaint or two from confidential sources.
Of course the Bricklayers gave Saxon nothing. He is a two faced loser. The rest of the union money is must part of the spread.
Furthermore, I am certain that everybody will be pleased to hear that the Saxon campaign is now a one man operation. Campaign Manager George Birchby left the campaign recently. I am sure that it was because of the candidate's inadequacies as a fundraiser. His finance director left in February because of Saxon's unwillingness to listen to seasonal political/financial advise. Now Saxon for Congress is just a candidate with no political experience.
This general election, in my book, went from a 60-40 race (GOP nominee on top) to more along the lines of a 70-30 race or lower. We can probably expect sub-Terry Holley numbers at this point considering the fact that Saxon's campaign can not afford staff and that it is July...not many veteran politicos have time on their hands for another successful race, do not even think they will work on a losing campaign like Saxon for Congress.
You can quit now, William Marvin Saxon. Game Over.
Oh yeah,
Paul Broun has one extremely distorted view of the constitution.
This is why Fleming needs to win the primary.
Just remember, for those of you that do not support Broun...but will not vote in the GOP primary for Fleming. When Broun makes these ridiculous statements...you are making these ridiculous statements. That is how representative government works. Broun is representing you. No wonder people up north think that Georgians do not even wear shoes.
So Broun hates judges who go
So Broun hates judges who go soft on child rapists... yet votes against legislation which cracks down on child predators? This guy is hoot.
I just love the irony that the "defender of the Constitution" Paul Broun is so dead set against a Judicial Branch set up by that very document. Also, by the appearance of his rant, is against the system of checks and balances which are also so kindly laid out in our Constitution. It seems that when the SCOTUS does its job they're being evil and must be overthrown by Congress. Should Congress be impeached and overthrown for doing their job and creating laws (not that we have to worry about any of that lawmaking going on with Pelosi in charge)?
I honestly don't think Paul Broun has read that pocket constitution he carries around with him. Then again, I think his "conversion to Christ" story is shakier than his credit history. I also feel that his passage through the University of Georgia and the Medical College of Georgia have less to do with his own merit and more to do with who his father was... (a belief that is apparently supported by his inability to form a coherent sentence, ably practice medicine, or showcase more than a 4th grade level of knowledge on how the US Government works).
He's admitted once to not reading every bill that crosses his desk. Keith Olbermann has even shown us just a small sample of the loose grip on facts and figures Broun's mind possesses. He thinks there is an al-Qaeda sleeper cell in Athens... multiple ones at that. He loses sleep at night over the fact that they've found turbans in the Mexican desert. He uses the line "God doesn't bless America as long as we keep killing millions of unborn children" as a stock campaign line... (The irony in that statement is far far greater and far far more sordid than it would be decent and proper to get into... and I'm not just talking about the fact he ran as pro-choice in 1990).
Not only do I feel that God blesses each and every one of us, every single day... but I believe that the actions of this country have no bearing on whether or not he bestows his blessings... and far be it from Paul Broun to tell me what God does, thinks, or feels.
The man is a roving embarrassment to this district and to this state and is a walking punchline on Capitol Hill. I may not be fully passionate nor completely pleased with the alternative of Barry Fleming, but at least he's a man with a more rigid backbone and some greater semblance of coherency and competency.
I'm voting for Barry Fleming... because I deserve better... the 10th district deserves better... and the United States deserves better.
In addition, its a sad state of affairs when the only person in your camp is that sleazy scumbag Ralph Hudgens.
P.S.
I don't think the Supreme Court is losing any sleep over the thought of a doof like Paul Broun trying to impeach him.
By the way... does this behavior remind anyone of when Kucinich or Cynthia McKinney tried to impeach President Bush? I guess I'm now just realizing the level of wackjob Paul Broun is.
I'm interested in this. If
I'm interested in this. If you're a "strict constitutionalist," why do you propose three Constitutional Amendments in one year? Doesn't seem to add up.
But Blake, be honest. How many non-political people are really around Paul Broun? The average voter with sense would stay at least ten feet away. I'm sure these revelations are new to most people. Not us, but we pay attention. Never forget that most people only pay attention when things are really startling or really bad.
BOBBY SAXON FOR CONGRESS!!
Jacob, thanks for all you comments. You make it easy to see that you and other supporters of Barry Fleming are no different than Barry himself. You and Barry are both spineless individuals who can't seem to stay with what is important to the people of this district. I have met Bobby Saxon and I can definately see why you have it in for him. He is a man with much pride for his country and is really wanting to make a difference for this district by doing what is right. You and Barry have no idea what is right. Right to you is trying so hard at slandering others, while not even worrying about what really needs to be accomplished in this district. Paul Broun may have also not made the best decisions as our Congressman, but I also feel he has character. We need more character in this distict, not people like you who hide behind a computer. I think the "game over" should be for you Jacob Durden. This distrist is about tired of listening to you and people like Barry Fleming! We need to build, not destroy!
Also, Blake you disappoint me too!
Me?
What did I do?
If Broun were
If Broun were a strict constitutionalist Gonzales v. Raich would mean something to him.
Broun isn't just a strict
Broun isn't just a strict constitutionalist...
He's a doctor, a scientist, a Marine, a safari guide, a lobbyist, a farmer, a hunter, and a US Congressman to boot.
The only court cases Paul Broun knows about are the ones where he had to pony up child support.
Broun has no say what so
Broun has no say what so ever over who will be a Supreme Court Justice. He can blather on about how horrible they are, but he'll never be able to change who gets in..that is the Senate's responsibility and last I checked he's running for the House.
And what is up with the whole "intent of the framers" bs anyway? The intent of the framers was to disenfranchise women, blacks, the poor, and pretty much anyone who was a wealth landowning white anglo-protestant. Not to mention that blacks were only 3/5ths of a person. And they were quite successful for 100+ years, but the world changes, the Constitution is a living document that has been able to adjust to an evolving world. It was never meant to stay the same and is shouldn't.
The constitution is a living
The constitution is a living document that is to be changed by amendment, not judicial whimsy. It was made a difficult process to prevent changes by a few individuals wishes. If a Supreme Court was well packed with either conservative or progressive proponents our governing principles would be at risk. The current view of Supreme Court function is at odds with constitutional intent.
Truth is often inconvenient and insistent!
Wasn't it the Supreme Court
Wasn't it the Supreme Court that decided blacks were 3/5ths a person, not the framers?
Not smarter than a Fifth Grader.
No, not even close.
The 3/5ths comes from the census provision for apportioning seats in the House of Representatives.
It was a compromise provision get the southern states to support the idea of proportional representation in the House of Representatives.
It's also why we have the
It's also why we have the Electoral College, which gives States the number of electors equal to their Representatives plus 2 (1 for each Senator). This formulation, rather than a strictly "popular vote" way of choosing the Pres, was to give Southern states greater influence in choosing the Pres, despite their relatively low (white) populations at the time.
Good thing the lad's not a
Good thing the lad's not a fifth grader yet. After that, I may be in trouble.
Idiot or liar?
I received the now infamous Fleming mailer but have held off commenting until now. I’m curious. All you Fleming supports-Was the mailer indicative of Fleming’s manner which he, if elected, will provide information to and communicate with the public with respect to clarity, truthfulness and emphasis or was the truth distorted to gain votes.
No JD
I am not going to waste my time on an uneducated bafoon like Saxon. His campaign is finished. He has no staff, no experience, no money.
Fleming is better than Broun, and Saxon can not win. What should you do?
Fleming is not perfect, he is far from it. I hate his position on tort reform...but, Saxon does not know what Torts are.
It is that simple.
So good, with a little vanilla ice cream
We picked a bunch of blackberries, and SWMBO is going to make a torte.
We also have some blueberries, and could reform it to one of those.
What would Fleming's position be on that.
Blueberries are blue. That
Blueberries are blue. That means you must be a closet liberal Nancy Pelosi Democrat!
True conservatives make tortes from raspberries or strawberries. Actually, they make cobblers. Tortes sound French.
Revisionist cooking
Tortes sound French.
A cobbler is just a torte that's been reformed -- all mixed together, no apparent connection between the parts.
FWIW, in Australia "They
FWIW, in Australia "They make cobblers" means "they make nothing." Rather accurate comment from Blake re conservatives, I think!
Wikipedia says ....
Blueberries "are pale greenish at first, then reddish-purple, and finally indigo on ripening."
So maybe they start out as a swing vote, then go a little more conservative and then finally Democrat! Flip-flopping fruit if you ask me.
Bricklayer continues to waste our time
Dear person whose real name is not Jacob Durden and purports to be part of the Bricklayers Union (despite no mention of anyone remotely connected to Georgia on their website):
For someone who claims to not waste time on Major Saxon, you have continued to engage in character assassination and sour grapes about him like a spurned lover or someone who was also fired from the Saxon campaign. Every mention you make of Saxon only makes you look much more like a buffoon (use spell check sometime, it will do your credibility wonders). I challenge you to cite an exact time and place of when you met or talked to Saxon. You obviously have a vendetta against him. You stalker-ish hate mail is boring, pathetic and highly unoriginal. I can guarantee you will have no future in the Southeastern United States working for any political candidate, union or cause. Try building some bridges instead of burning them. For the sake of political argument and acumen, try listing 10 positive things about Major Saxon instead of reciting his elementary school grades. Why do you hate this man so much? Did he reject you? Are you such a pissy person as to harbor such grudges to the point where we no longer care what venom and vomit you spew? At least change the topic of your next post so you can prove you are not a one trick pony. If you are a person of the slightest bit of honor or decency, you would have long ago moved on to different subjects or topics for your angry diatribes. Move on with your life, please, and at least you are no longer around here to complain about Saxon's new campaign or color scheme or friends or family or children or color of his shirt or shoes or brand of tires. Nothing you have ever mentioned amounts to a hill of beans when it comes to policy and issues. Try sticking to matters that matter, please. I think I can speak or at least write that we are all sick of your negative single-issue smearing of someone who is running for office.
